Westchester Breathes: Practices in Focus

Westchester Breathes: Practices in Focus Online

Each 40-45 minute session will focus on just 1 or 2 practices (or a short sequence) - ending with coherent breathing. We will start and end on time so you can continue with your day!

You should have attended at least 6 prior Westchester Breathes or Breath-Body-Mind sessions before attending.

Come for every session on Thursdays starting February 5, through April 23 2026. If you need to miss a session, no worries—come when you can!

Your instructors will be Elena & Keerti.

PRECAUTIONS WHEN PARTICIPATING IN WESTCHESTER LIBRARY SYSTEM PROGRAMS FOR WESTCHESTER BREATHES

Westchester Breathes is grounded in the work of Dr. Richard Brown and Dr. Patricia Gerbarg – two clinical psychologists who identified, studied, and currently teach simple, effective voluntary regulated breathing exercises shown to reduce the experience of stress and increase the ability of the body to self-soothe and heal. Together these practices are known as Breath-Body-Mind™ (BBM).

In participating in this class, you will receive information and instruction  about movement, breathing and meditation practices for health The practices are safe for most people; many of the practices can be done sitting, or lying down. Listen to your body. If you experience physical discomfort, stop, relax, and seek guidance from the instructor.

Before doing these practices, you are urged to consult with your physician if you have had recent surgery or a recent heart attack, currently have uncontrolled high blood pressure or difficulty breathing.  In addition to your physician, notify the instructor of any concerns; it is possible to modify some of the practices for individuals with certain physical or emotional challenges.

If you are pregnant, know that Coherent Breathing can be helpful! However, while in their 3rd trimester, we would advise you to breathe gently through all of the practices, avoiding both forceful breathing and breath holds.
